Integra -- Racetrack test (J's racing)
J's racing, located in the Kansai area where the popularity of Honda
is quite high, is well known as a Honda tuning expert. J's racing has
modified many Integra from street version to a full race version. Their
expertise for setting up a car for a racetrack is recognized as one of
the best in the tuning industry. J's racing also researches and develops
its original products.
The car brought for this review is the 96 based J's racing Integra race
car, you probably have seen it before. The car is based on the 96 Integra
which won the Suzuka N1 championship in 1997. It was preserved at the
shop after it retired from the N1 racing. The car was in a sense pretty
complete as N1 race car. This year, J's racing decided to give it a new
life with 2.0. Liter motor and with other latest modifications. The engine
block is from S-MX which increases the displacement to 2.0 liter from
1.8. The compression ratio has been raised to 13.1 and it is also equipped
with new Tsuchinoko chamber, J's racing SPL exhaust, and original racing
computer. It claims 245 hp. Body and suspension are reexamined and tuned
for pure race only spec.
A 2.0 liter motor on a pure race car? It sounds "extreme".
Plexiglas, FRP body parts, and complete weight reduction. This car is
for sure not a daily driver. The weight is only 850kg. An interesting
point is that J's racing changed the brake to a smaller one utilizing
EK4 brake assembly. The tire size is also same as stock, no increase of
the size. This is all based on the total weight of 850kg. A bigger brake
and tires are not necessary with a car of this light weight. In addition,
a smaller brake reduces the weight further. The best lap time for Suzuka
full international course is 2 min 25 sec and 1 min 25 sec at Central
racetrack. These lap times are "amazing" for naturally aspirated
car.
Impression from a professional
driver (Mr. Yamano)
"Best
matching suspension and tires"
The first impression is "this car is simply fast". The rev limit
is 8,500 rpm but with the huge torque equivalent to that of 2.5 liter
motor, you do not have to rev it to the limit. There is enough acceleration
at around 8,000 rpm. The transmission works very good and the gear ratios
are very well fit to the course. It makes me feel as if my driving has
been improved. I thought the suspension was pretty stiff based on the
setting number provided, but to my surprise, it was not as hard as I expected.
That might be due to the light weight of the car and its excellent setting.
Even though the tire size is 195, you feel you are driving with 225. The
combination of light weight and superior suspension setting make the car
fly on the race track.
